Syros, the capital of the Cyclades islands, located in the heart of the Aegean Sea, is known from ancient times as the homeland of the philosopher Ferekides, the teacher of Pythagoras, Hermoupolis, the capital of Syros, a peaceful creation of the greek revolution of 1821, is a lively monument of stately Neoclassical buildings of distinguished architectural beauty, influenced by Western European design. Ano Syros, a city from the Middle Ages, was built on a hill above today's Hermoupolis during the domination of the Roman Catholics. It is a site not to be missed with its narrow, cobblestone alleys and quaint, whitewashed houses ascending the hill, one after other. In Syros you will find picturesque, seaside villages such as Kini, Van, Finikas, Delagratsia, Galissas and Mega Yialos with clean beaches where one can enjoy a variety of sea sports, such as swimming, fishing, windsurfing, water-skiing and sailing. At island's restaurants you can enjoy excellent Greek dishes and at the tavernas, special local, traditional Greek delicacies. Coffee shops, discos, nightclubs and bars can be found in town as well as in the villages. Hermoupolis' many shops offer a variety of merchandise for every need and desire. Gymnasium and sport centres are also available for public use besides the district buses and taxies for transport around the island, there are also cars, motorbikes, bicycles, sailboats and pleasure boats for rent.
