The second feat: nine-head hydra
His second task was to Destroy the Lernean hydra, which was sitting in the swamp close to the spring Lerne and devastated the suburbs. So Heracles should undertake the journey to this spring. He took his nephew and good friend and asked him not to interfere in what would happen. On reaching the swamp Heracles started shooting red-hot arrows into the den of the hydra and made her by this to get out. Heracles pounced on this creature and began cutting off her heads. But a strange phenomenon it was : instead of each cut off head a new one grew, more awful and danger. Moreover to help this beast another monster came - huge dragon. This companion-in-arms of the hydra was biting Heracles's heel. At this very moment the help of friends became necessary. Heracles's friend set on fire trees and as only Heracles cut off the next head, he cauterized this place with the burning tree and no new heads could grow here. During this fight Heracles cut right 8 heads off and right 8 times his friend cauterized these places. The only ninth head left, but this was an invulnerable and immortal head. Then Heracles threw on hydra big cliff, which buried hydra under itself and made not dangerous for people. Before return to the palace Heracles wetted his arrows in hydra's poisonous urine. Now all wounds, he will ever make, become incurable. Even Gods cannot cure them.
