The new task was to kill the birds of prey , which lived in the district of Stymphalian lake. These birds were as big as gryphons, but their beaks, claws and feathers were from bronze. Moreover they could throw their feathers like arrows and kill everybody who tried to approach. Heracles and his friend came to the lake, where these birds lived, but birds were at the moment away. So friends sat down on the lakeshore and got ready to wait for these terrible birds. They did not know one specific thing about this lake: from its surface an asphyxiating air was raising up. This smell enveloped them, holding their arms and legs. Heroes started falling asleep. At this moment one after another these frightful birds appeared from the forest. Heracles felt that he was not able to take his bow in arms and to stretch the bow-string. Suddenly it tinkled somewhere close to the heroes. It proved to be Athena, which sent to Heracles a ratchet made by godlike smith Hephaestus. Heracles's friend was first of them who woke up. He took this ratchet and started shaking it. At this moment Heracles woke up as well and started shooting arrows until all birds fell dead. Thus Heracles and his friend returned home safe and sound. The Lord could only astonish how Heracles managed with this task.
