Now Heracles had to get down to Hades and bring from the underworld Cerberus the three headed dog. It was not the first time Heracles traveled to the underworld. So he was not afraid of it. In the very South of Greece there was a huge abyss - entry into the nether world. Heracles entered and saw a big black three headed dog, which he was to draw out to his world. Cerberus did not prevent anyone from entering the hell but did not let them out. That is why Heracles went on and at the Gate to the realm of shadows found Theseus, chained to the cliff. Heracles set Theseus free and appeared before Hades. The latter allowed Heracles to take the dog to the upper world but with the only condition if Heracles could beat Cerberus without any weapon. The struggle was long and bloody. The three headed dog tried to frighten the hero with barking. Poisonous saliva was dropping from its muzzle. However Heracles conquered the dog : he caught it, bound and brought out.

When Heracles threw the dog before the Lord, the latter found no word to say. He was so much afraid that even asked Heracles to bring this dog back to the hell. Heracles did it but promised to himself to do it never again.
